“Introduction:

Who are the Baptists of the Baptist Association of Belize?

We are over fifty established church and mission congregations who form a part of the over 110 million Baptist throughout the world.

The first Baptist Church was planted in Belize in 1822. The ‘Baptist Church of Belize’ was incorporated on 9 October, 1976.

From 1822 -1850 the Baptist witness in British Honduras was under the auspices of the London Baptist Missionary Society. When the Society abandoned their missionary efforts, the Mission in British Honduras became an independent mission.

In 1889, assistance came from the Jamaica Missionary Society with the arrival of Rev. Charles Brown as Missionary Agent. By 1902, the Mission in British Honduras was again on its own but this time under the leadership of Chief Pastor and Superintendent, Rev. Robert Cleghorn JP, OBE.

In 1976, the Southern Baptist and Conservative Baptist Missions who by that time had entered the country consolidated the Baptist witness and the ´Baptist Church of Belize’ was incorporated on October 9, 1976.

A National Executive Committee with language group divisions, later changed to regional groups, head what is today called the ´Baptist Association of Belize.´
